My 5 Favorite Countries For Street Portraits

I love making street portraits when I travel. Having those brief and beautiful human connections, learning about different cultures, it’s beautiful. People in some nations are more open to being photographed by a stranger. With that, I’m sharing my favorite countries for practicing street portrait photography.

I’m fortunate to have visited over 50 countries around the world. In some parts, most people reject my offer for a street portrait, whereas in others, they’re in front of my lens before I’ve finished asking the question.

My success rate has likely improved because I’m a more confident street portrait photographer. Getting people to agree is very much a sales pitch, but thankfully I’ve learned some techniques that help me get out of my comfort zone and help subjects agree to the shot. I wrote an e-guide to help others…

If you’re a budding travel photographer or someone who wants to try making street portraits on the road, here are the countries I believe will give you the best experience and success.

Street Portraits in India

India is hands down my favorite country for street portraits. I took hundreds during my three week visit, and many of them I didn’t even need to ask the question. That’s because Indian people are open and curious. Often, they would approach me and ask for me to help make their photograph.

Their cultural way of dressing makes them fascinating subjects. The clothing is vibrant, full of flair and really makes them pop when put against a mundane backdrop.

Almost every subject asked if I would take a selfie with them. I said yes to everyone because it’s those little moments that bring us together and make the world go round. I should say India can be intense, especially in the heat. But, the people are almost always respectful and I found them great to engage with.

Street Portraits in Colombia

At this point in life, Colombia is almost my second home. I fell in love with the people during the pandemic and have returned several times to make street portraits. It’s also home to some of the most attractive looking people in the world. They’re very out-going, warm and love being in front of the camera.

I do most of my street portrait photography in Medellin. The people have a swagger about them that I can only dream of having. People also take care of their dogs, dressing them in bows and other hair pieces. If you want some human and dog photography, then Colombia is the way to go.

Many people ask me; is Colombia Dangerous for Street Photography?, fearing something may happen to their camera when out in public. The brief answer is no, as long as you’re street smart and avoid certain places. Outside of those zones, Colombia is perfect for candid photography and street portraits.

Street Portraits in Thailand

My main memory of Thailand is the smiles. People are so smiley, especially in Chiang Mai where I spent most of my time. This makes it perfect for street portraits because it instantly breaks down any barriers you think may block you from asking to make their photograph.

The children are very lively. They’re living in a beautiful climate, having fun learning about the world. This energy makes them excellent subjects for street portrait photography. I know photographing children is a sensitive topic, and I explain why it’s okay in my Do’s and Don'ts of Street Photography.

If you want the best street portraits, I recommend going in April as that’s when it’s Songkran, aka Thai New Year. It’s a big street party full of water fights and good times.

Street Portraits in Turkey

I’m in love with Turkey, especially Istanbul. The city is vibrant and the people are very

chic. I’m talking fashionable, artistic, open minded; the perfect cocktail for street portrait photography.

If you visit, I recommend going to the areas surrounding the Galata Tower. They have modern, European vibes. Kadikoy is a good area too. Here you'll find students, artists trying to make a name for themselves and contemporary coffee types…ideal subjects for your portfolio.

Street Portraits in England

Being English, I’ve made street portraits all across England and know a thing or two about English culture. Despite our conservative image, English people are creative and love-on-the spot collaboration. I think this is more true in my home city, Leeds, where we’re known for our warm friendly vibes - but naturally, I’m biased.

That said, if you want diversity, creativity and eccentricity then there’s no better place than London. Not just in England, but in the world. Everyone from all walks of life roams the streets of London, making it a hotbed for creating a great photography portfolio. It’s a multicultural city as well, so you can meet all walks of life all in one magical space.

Honorable Mentions

Berlin.

Above are my favorites, but there are others spots I recommend and below are some honorable mentions…

  • United States: New York is wonderfully diverse and full of characters.

  • Mexico: CDMX, especially Parque Mexico as it’s full of vibrant life and wonder.

  • Spain: Great weather creates a great atmosphere, plenty of people up for street portraits.

  • Germany: Love Berlin, full of eccentric people and a range of subcultures.
