Peter Dench on Nightlife, Tragedy, and Finally Photographing His Family

Peter Dench is a renowned documentary and reportage photographer whose work has spent decades exploring British life. His interests include football fandom, UK nightlife and reporting on important events as they unfold, often with a sharp eye for humor alongside the more serious moments.

He’s also the regular contributer to Amateur Photographer and the co-founder of Photo North, a prominent photography festival held in the north of England.

In this episode of Them Frames That Make Us, Peter takes me through three images: a boat party that marked the end of an era, a late-night accident that taught him the responsibilities of a photojournalist, and a never-before-seen lockdown portrait of his wife.
