The New Fujifilm GFX100RF is a First of its Kind…

At today’s Fujifilm X Summit Event in Prague, the company officially announced a new 102 megapixel GFX series camera. The Fujifilm GFX100RF is the lightest camera of the company's medium-format range and comes with a design we’re yet to see on other Fuji cameras. Here’s what you need to know…

Fujifilm’s Medium Format Camera

Inspired by the popularity of the Fujifilm X100 line up, The Fujifilm GFX100RF is the first fixed lens camera in the GFX lineup. The lens is a 35mm F4 (28mm full-frame equivalent.) It has 10 elements in eight groups and a minimum focus distance of 20CM.

The camera weighs 735 grams, that’s 40 grams less than the previous lightest GFX camera, the GFX50R. It’s built with metal elements and is available in both black and silver.

The GFX100 RF has a high-resolution 5.76 million dot EVF and a 3.15-inch 2.1 million dot LCD monitor. The camera has a built-in digital crop system, allowing you to digitally zoom between 35mm, 45mm, 63mm and 80mm.

There's also a new dedicated aspect ratio dial on the camera's exterior. It allows you to jump through popular aspect ratios including 3:2, 16:9 and 4:3.

It’s the first GFX camera to feature a leaf shutter system. That’s good news for photographers using flash, as it allows you to shoot at any shutter speed, rather than the standard limitation of around 1/250sec. Leaf shutters are also quieter which some street photographers may welcome - as it helps them remain incognito when shooting candidly.

Some photographers will be disappointed to learn the new GFX camera doesn’t support IBIS or OIS - not ideal for those who shoot at slower shutter speeds, have shaky hands or want to do some handheld video recording.

Who is the Fujifilm GFX100RF for?

Fujifilm is clearly targeting those who practice street photography, travel photography and documentary photography. The 35mm F4 lens on the Fujifilm GFX100RF is perfect for a range of shots, including candid, portrait and landscape.

Street and Travel photographers who are not fans of the APS-C sensors built into most Fujifilm cameras will be drawn to the medium-format image quality. You’ll see more detail in your frames, especially when you print, and it’s going to offer improved performance in low light situations. That said, Fujifilm’s crop-sensor cameras already demonstrate excellent low-light images.

How Much Does the Fujifilm GFX100 RF Cost?

The GFX100RF costs $4,899 (USD) and is set to launch in April 2025, depending on your region. It’s a pretty penny for a camera, but it’s still cheaper than a similar camera, the Leica Q3 27mm, which features a full-frame sensor and costs over $6000 (USD)
